Respect

Thirdly, afternoon tea fosters respect. Because all of the participants have arrived with a grateful attitude, they will naturally treat each other with respect. They will discipline themselves to avoid negative thoughts as well as actions and will focus on the beauty of the occasion and the admirable qualities of their companions. In Hawaii, this mind set is known as Aloha, a way of looking at every person as a precious brother, sister, uncle or “auntie.” Another Hawaiian term, “talk story,” describes an open-hearted conversation among friends and family members with kind and loving intentions. Talk story creates a relaxed and happy mood because everyone feels respected. This sense of wellbeing that comes from feeling respected explains why no one gossips during talk story or during afternoon tea.
Gossip is a form of disrespect toward people who are not present, and it poisons the mood of any social gathering and makes people feel unclean. The commitment to avoid gossip or any other form of disrespect is part of the covenant between the hostess and her guests during afternoon tea.
